Blessed am I among women

Had the most wonderful, sad, beautiful, melancholic, fun and energetic night ever.

It was Christen's last night in town with the gang (me, Kristen, Trevor, Christen). We were gonna go to Lake Sylvan to commemorate Trevor's first live music dancing night, but we decided to stay in Calgary. So for the afternoon we ate chocolate and shwaramas and shared dance moves (bal stuff) and aerials on the lawn. Then we went and played basketball for a couple hours before hitting the Red Onion. So good. Wicked blues. It was weird though, in the midst of good music and wonderful friends I hit this introverted self concious funk. I get them sometimes, and usually the trick is to lay low till I can get the alone time and recharge. God love em though, my friends managed to pull me out of it before anyone even noticed it. That's rare, and it takes really special people to do it.

I'm sad so deep down about Christen leaving. It hasn't even reached the surface yet. We've build such a wonderful connection in the last few weeks, it's been amazing. On the dance floor, awesome, off the dance floor, just as awesome. I was just starting to learn so many cool things about her (like she's fascinated by relics and iconography), and deepening the friendship. It's so hard to see it go long distance now. But, as such it is life, and it goes on... She's living in a convent in Italy, so you know part of me is somewhere there anyway :D

Oh yeah, and to cap the night we hit Tubby Dog, popped some Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly on the jukebox, and had a Lindy Smack down. Kristen and I took it on moves and style, but Trevor and Christen definitely got the dramatic flair award with the coat thrown on the floor when the guy cooking dogs yelled 'dance off!' and with the ballroomy bow at the end. It was a lot of fun to see all the patrons, from the Goth kids in the corner to the latin dancers looking pretty, clapping and cheering for us. Good times, we pwn that place.

I'll miss ya Christen with a Christ, God keep you on your trip.

The last post

Well, from this office anyway. I'm sitting in a darkened empty office at St. Bonaventure, writing this as I am about to say goodbye to full time youth ministry coordinating. Will our paths meet again? I don't know, but I hope if they do it's over in Ireland.

Anyway, it's been an amazing 2 years, with loads of wonderful friendships, and lots of good work done. Thank you so much everyone involved. I love you all, and will see you as a civilian shortly.

God Bless

I got wood!

That's right, 5ftx5ft of baltic birch. It's not the exact quality I wanted, but close enough (there are knots that have been plugged in it, I was hoping for knot free). So tonight the plan is to cut out the stencil for the board form and trace it onto the wood, plus drill the holes for clamping the two pieces together. If I get that far then I'm laughing, by the weekend I can have it all glued. (I'm making a longboard for anyone who's wondering).

Wheeee

What a day

They don't get any better... really they don't.

It was a road trip I've been looking forward to for weeks. Christen Kelly (from te swing club) is leaving for Italy next week, so Kristen, Christen, Trevor and Myself decided to re-create a road trip we did last year to Sylvan Lake. Last year's was for dancing, but it was looking like we were gonna miss the dance this year so we figured just a day on the road would be the next best thing. Turns out it was even better.

There's no real 'stories' from the day except to say we just acted like a bunch of kids all day and had a blast doing it. I think really it was more the people. To sound hokey, there was a lot of love in the car. The four of us have truly developed a wonderful bond, and I would consider the gang to be some of the greatest friends I have.

When we got back it was time for the Sunalta dance, and it was perfect icing on the cake. There was just a tonne of energy, and Christen and Heather DJed a great set. I danced at least half of the dances all night, got a bit of my bal groove back, and mustve had about 6 great dances with each of the K(ch)ristens. I'm so sad the day had to end because it was just perfect. The only bitter drop in the sweetness was that it was really a going away day for Christen. She's moving to Italy, which is totally awesome, but I'm just getting to know her better and finding out what a sweetheart she is. I wish we four could stay as such for longer. No one could ever 'replace' her, but I hope we can add a new fourth to the gang to fill it out... it seems like such a perfect number.

The best part... we get to do it again next saturday cuz it turns out Christen will be here for the sylvan dance. I wish we had the valiant to cruise in.

So very tired

Man, I'm just dyin here. So glad it's raining today. I've been working 12+ hour days every day this week out on Crowchild. What a crappy project. First, it sucks. Add in then our main piece of equipment breaking twice. So this morning at 5:30 I get the best phone call ever... we're rained out. Chris wanted me to go to Regina with him for a couple days on a project, but I gotta be around this weekend, so I couldn't. Thank God... I am so tired. 5-6 hours of sleep a night with days that long is too much when I have 6 other things to worry about. But, thank God for small favours. This morning I slept in, and now I can catch up at the church and relax a bit... maybe clean and cook tonight... mmm... fresh food. That is, if I don't just sleep.

Good weekend, bad hangover

Not the alcoholic kind... the athletic kind. I got a call at the last minute to go to Devin's cabin for the weekend. It was really really awesome. It had all the incidental factors going for it, amazing weather, great water, good times with the wakeboard (I can confidently jump toe and heel side now, and inches away from wake to wake on the heel side). And the fireworks were gas. We blew up about $150 worth of stuff in about 20 minutes... so much fun (only cuz we didn't have to pay for them). The best part was just being with the Uhrichs for a relaxing weekend though. They are such wonderful people and have always been so generous in bringing me on some of their holiday time. Oh yeah, and the girls are nice to look at out there too. Biggest two lessons learned... #1 I can't take the punishment like I could as a kid, so I gotta get in better shape, cuz I have no intention of slowing down, and #2 When you hear 10 or so teenagers giggling on a raft in the lake at like 11 at night, don't shine the superbright flashlight on them cuz they're all nekkid (actually, it was REALLY REALLY funny)

The downside is I kinda blew off a date to go out. It was tentative, and I coulda said I was working (it was dependant on whether or not I was in the field) but I just can't lie, and I don't want to start a precedent early in a potential friendship, so I'm kinda in a bit of trouble. I'll have to plan a pretty awesome day next time we go out to make up some points.

Anyway, back into the field tomorrow, g'night

Good weekend, bad hangover

White bands are in!

I'd given up on them. They came today.

For those not in the loop, the white band (yes, a la the armstrong ones, yes its a trend, yes I jumped on the bandwagon) are for the global campaign to eliminate poverty. Great work has been done so far, including public pressure that has resulted in large amounts of third world debt relief. Orgainizations like Engineers Without Borders and the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (Development and Peace) are collaborating in huge ways to further this campaign.

I have 50 of the bands, 40 regular, 10 small, available to anyone who wants one. I donated $25 and paid $10 shipping for them. If you'd like to donate, please feel free, but it's an awareness campaign and I am happy to donate the money I did, so if you just want one that is fine too.

Post a comment or email or call me (if you have the info) and I'll get you one.

Enough already

I'm frustrated to no end with the swing scene right now. There's all sorts of pseudo argument flying around out there on the message board, and it's driving me nuts. I'm always good for a debate, but there seems to be a level of eliteism right now that's getting to me, and it's balancing on the verge of flame war. The gist of it is people arguing about what swing music is and what lindy hop is and whether or not lindy hoppers and west coast swingers can get along or share a night etc. Seriously, how hard is it to say for the people interested, we will, as a club, check out their scene on such and such a night. I guess its just frustrating because I got back into the swing of things so to speak for the fun side of it, and the politics and 'discussing' are really dragging it down.

On an unrealated note I had a lavadate tonight (ie met someone off of lavalife) and had a good time. It was enjoyable to meet someone new. Also got an affirmative on the would you like to meet again thing, so that's cool. Not really looking for anything beyond kicks and giggles, so so far mission accomplished!

And another one bites the dust.

Yeah, so I'm quite possibly losing another choir member. Alison wants to move to London Ontario. Sigh. I need to do some serious recruitment. I'll say the same thing I said about Dave. I'm sad for the potential loss, but I'm happy that you are taking steps to find your calling. Thanks for all your years of helping us out.

Been to busy to update, what with the parents around and whatnot. I've gotten some new toys, a new guitar (it's so preeety) and a longboard. It's pretty fun cruising around the neighbourhood on it.

So I get to spend this beautiful day working on thesis stuff. Good times. So wish I had time and energy to hit the river or someting. Ah well, the way it rolls.
