Once again, I'm a genius
At least when it comes to fixing problems that are directly caused by me, which seems to happen a little too frequently.
So in getting the drain bolt out of the final drive, I pushed it into the resevoir. Luckily (and I really mean LUCKILY) I managed to fish it out through the filling hole with a groovy little magnetic tool. It was a scary couple hours though. I got the one out of the engine using a screwdriver, cuz no way was I risking doing the same thing in the engine... that I WOULD have had to take apart. Now it's just sitting in a coccoon in the backyard waiting.
In other news I'm starting to feel the lonely setting in. I think the emotional walls that flew up when Erin and I broke up are starting to come down. It's at that point where it takes too much effort to keep them there. It's kinda scary cuz it means I'm gonna have some hard dealing to do pretty soon, and I don't feel ready to. But that's life right, you act tough, deal, and break down when you think you can get away with it without being seen. Anyway, this is sounding too emo... I'm gonna go do some work.

Our first fight
Well, I'm pretty seriously behind on my motorcycle maintenance. Three major setbacks today. First, when I was taking out the drain plugs the small one on the head of the engine sheared. The idiot who put it in must have either really cranked it in there, or cross threaded the bolt. That's like rule #1 of auto maintenance. Whenever you do the oil change, be REALLY careful with the drain plugs so that you can get them out next time. Not changing the oil for 2 years probably didn't help either. Problem #2 was the stupid suspension. Draining a fork is easy, getting the stupid cap back on the top... not so easy. Maybe there's some sort of tool for it, but I couldn't find one. Basically you have to fight like a 200 lb spring for about 2 inches, then somehow screw the cap in keeping the pressure on. It took like 2 hours of trying, but I finally got that one. The last problem was on the final drive gear box (where the shafts from the engine run the rear wheel). I got the oil out (a bit of a pain cuz it's REALLY thick) and managed to find a 10 cc syringe to put new stuff in. Then I take out my trusty torque wrench, go to tighten the drain plug to 20 lb (there's no spec for it, but the oil drain is 25-29 so I figured it'd be good). But yeah, it was a bit of a weak bolt, and it sheared too. So tomorrow, I get to do the other fork (I've got a system for that now so it shouldn't be too bad). The tough part will be getting those drain plugs out though. I've got a fancy little tool for it, but I've never used one before, so I'm a little nervous. Power tools, drill bits, and motorcycles seems like a dangerous combination.
Anyway, my thumbs hurt from squashing the shocks, so no more typing tonight.

A new Pope
Our new Pope is Benedict XVI, formerly Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. It's an interesting, but not at all unexpected choice. Ratzinger was JPII closest advisor. He's famous for his extremely orthodox viewpoints.
On the one hand, it seems positive because he's 78, and will do well to preserve the teachings of the church while we catch our breath after JPII and do some evaluation. On the other hand, it's a bit scary, because realistically, we could see things go back from where they are now.
For me personally, it is going to be a big challenge for the next while to just trust God. I can say for sure I will be praying that He will guide the new Pope. But I do believe the Holy Spirit is steering our Church, so I just have to have faith in that and not fear.
An interesting aside, in case you hear it elsewhere totally misinterpreted. Ratzinger was a member of the HJ (Hitler youth) in Nazi germany. He was conscripted into that and then the army. He was placed in an anti aircraft squadron and guarded a mercedes plant until he deserted in 1945 and became a POW with the Americans. The trolls and haters out there are using this to spout stuff like 'the Pope is a Nazi' etc. Don't worry, his parents were strongly anti nazi, and had to move around to avoid being captured. And he defected, an action punishable by death. He was quite certainly anti Nazi. The fact that he and JPII (A man who fought against Nazi occupation in Poland) were such close friends says a lot too. So there ya go, if someone fires that one at you you can shut em down.

Random occurances
Well, there was something I was gonna rant about a bit, but I forgot what it was, so instead I'll just post some random stuff.
First off, I got my motorcycle! It's a 1983 Honda Magna v45 (750). It's in really nice shape, a couple little fixer upper things, but not much really. I spent about half the day today detailing it. Now the front forks, headlight, fender, horn, and exhaust pipes are all polished and the tank and farings are both nice and shiny. If I get some time tomorrow I'll do the detailing on the metalwork underneath the engine and on the foot pegs. After that it's the coated metal and plastic pieces. I might polish the engine covers too, but I haven't decided yet. I'm hoping I can get the rear sissy bar figured out soon, but I can't seem to figure how to put it on. When hello stops hating me, and I get everything finished on the body detailing I'll post a picture.
Umm, that's actually all for now really. Everything else pales in comparison to the awesomeness of having a bike finally.

How did we get from saying 'I love you'
to 'I'll see you around someday'?
Erin and I broke up. This is the first time I've ever experience real heartbreak. It is horrible beyond all words.
I don't know how much I can really say on my blog that isn't too personal, except that my friends have been amazing through the last month or so. Especially to Sandy and Arlin, for being caring enough to keep checking up on me, Devin for having the courage to ask me about it and actually want to know what's happened, him and Breanne for listening to the whole story (at least as much of it as I understand), Dave and Alison for distracting me so faithfully at BPs every sunday, Jen and Aaron for taking me under thier social wing, Matt for wanting to call me the instant I sent him a message and for helping me know I have someone to ride this out with, Nick and Andrea for offering to get me out of town, my brother for wanting to get me drunk and or take me on a road trip, Mom and dad for calling me, and for offering to fly me out to Cairo or to come home if I need it, Denise for her ear and the advice during the lead up to it, and everyone else who's offered thier support and love. It really is hope for me, and it fights off the fierce lonliness when it gets the worst.
Wow, this sounds like an Oscar's acceptance speech or something. And the award for the love life most resembling a train wreck goes to...

Thank You
Not my words, but his. My hopes in the last two days have been that the Holy Father would live his end with all the strength and beautiful example with which he lived his life. I could not have imagined that his last message of the world would be to the youth of the world. 'I have looked for you. Now you have come to me. And I thank you.' It leaves me speechless. I wish I could express profound thoughts about his life, or death, but I'm left not knowing what to say.
His impact around the world is phenominal. To be such a man of the people, to love the young of the Church so much, to cross so many political and religious boundaries, to so humbly accept and ask forgiveness for many of the sins of our church in the past.
The have been showing his trips to canada on CBC. The small villiages, and remote areas he visited. Footage of children performing for him (dancing) then running to him, hugging and kissing him, and being recieved with joy. The fact that he went to the NWT twice, because the first time his plane couldn't land and he promised he would come back.
The fact that muslims of france were praying for him. The fact that China, who has forbidden Chinese catholics to recognize the vatican, officially stated they were hoping and praying for his recovery. Even George Bush, as hippocritical it is to hear him talk about the value of human life, recognizing him as our Shepherd, and sitting on the throne of Peter, even though the Fundamentalists don't recognize that.
But more than anything, his death is so striking. He went serenely, ready to meet Christ, confident in salvation, and with a message of thanks and hope to the youth of the church on his lips.
The next period is going to be difficult and critical for Catholics, and the whole world. The Cardinals will soon meet to begin the process to select a new pope. Any Catholic man can become pope (if it were ever to be a lay person they would be ordained upon their appointment). JPII changed some rules about how it's done. To prevent political and emotional discourse, the cardinals will write down secret ballots for his successor. There are I think 21 votes that will involve needing a majority for a single person. If after the 21 they can't decide, there is one more, with the need for a majority no longer necessary.
Many are speculating on Cardinals who will succeed JPII, some expect a caretaker pope (one who will not serve long, to let the church catch its breath), others a third world pope. But we need to remember, it is prayer and the guidance of God we need to seek. Not is a critical time of prayer for us. All Catholics need to pray with passion, deep from their hearts, that it will be the Holy Spirit, God alone, that motivates the voting, and our leaders select who God wants. We must be people of trust and prayer and hope.

Reports are rolling in that Pope John Paul II is dying quickly. He has had a heart attack and circulatory system failure from septic shock. Doctors have said it is only a matter of time, and Joaquin Navarro-Valls left the press room in tears. They have said an fit patient in intensive care in his condition would last less than 48 hours.
He has decided to stay in his room at the Vatican, overlooking St. Peter's. They have said he is conscious and lucid, and celebrated Mass at dawn today. Everyone has said he is serene, and ready. He has recieved the anointing of the sick and prayed the liturgy of the third hour (the final moments of Christ).
Many are asking 'what next?' and speculating on the future. I would like to ask everyone reading this blog to refrain from that for the time being. We can worry about the future when it becomes necessary, but for the time being, one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen is in grave condition. I will post reflections on his life and some info about the future when it becomes appropriate. Please focus your thoughts, and prayers on his life now, and that he will pass in peace, quickly into God's arms.
