Merry Christmas

That's right I said it. Chirstmas. Not happy holidays (well, happy holidays too), but MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Okay, that's out of my system.

Went to the food bank yesterday to help out a bit... it was good. They put four of us on the hamper line so we were packing hampers for clients. Pretty good time. Support your food bank this Christmas, then support them even more in January cuz that's when they really need it.

I'm leaving today. Kinda scary, really excited, and just a little sad. It's hard when all the friends I see once or twice a year are in town and I have to say goodbye to them and stuff this early. It's even harder what with the fiancee and all :( I'm turning into a wuss, I was near tears when I said goodbye to her today. But then there is also the strange emotion of knowing I'll be leaving on what will probably be one of, if not the most, exotic as well as fancy trips of my life. I'll also be getting my wedding suit and Erin's wedding band made while I'm there. It's all very cool, but somewhat strange feelings.

Anyway, pray for me while I'm in Kenya, especially that me and my family are safe from disease and crime, there's lots of both there. I'll keep you all in my prayers while I'm gone... well, by all I mean all of you that I actually know who you are... if you're a random stranger reading this then it's hard to pray for you cuz I don't even know you exist.

Wow, rambly, time to go get ready.

Cross country mahem

Yeah, went on Sunday with Sandy and Arlin. Couldn't really keep up to them, but had a good time. My skills have definitely improved even if my cardio strength hasn't. We went to Elk pass, saw moose, elk, sheep, coyote, and a bold little whiskey jack. I'm suffering from a pretty good althletic hangover though... good times.

Got my wedding suit fabric... it's gorgeous. Really beautiful. It's bone white Lanocet (or something like that) wool. I got a great deal on it too. You know it's funny, I can have a custom suit, with an ankle length jacket, vest, and old school pants made from the finest suiting wool money can buy, for less than fifth the cost of your average run of the mill wedding dress. Does anyone else see a weirdness to that?

Anyway, nothing much else interesting. Enjoy the meteor shower.

The ruling comes down

So the supreme court ruled today on same sex marriage. There was a TV crew in here this morning interviewing Fr. Bill on it, so keep your eyes on Global news tonight.

I have mixed feelings on it. The court set out to answer four questions. The first is the one I feel the worst about. Does the federal government have excluse legal authority to define marriage, to which they unanimously voted yes. This upsets me because I don't see it as the government's responsibility to define marriage for anyone. Marriage comes out of a personal belief, and each belief system has their own definition. In fact this day in age everyone has their own belief system, even within the various religions. It is our government's job to protect religious freedom, defining marriage has nothing to do with that... back to this question in a bit.

The second question was does extending the capacity for same sex couples to get married constitutional. The answer to that was yes. To this I agree in a sense. My own morals aside, freedom is to respect the right of someone to do something you disagree with, thus if the government is going to define marriage, this is fitting with that ideal.

The third question was are religious leaders protected from having to marry same sex couples? The answer to this was yes. This means now, written in stone, that a religious leader cannon be forced to marry a same sex couple. This has a deeper implication, as it protects the same right to freedom as above. While the second question validates the right to have a same sex 'marriage', it also validates the right of anyone who doesn't want to recognize it as such. But it creates an odd contradiction. The government says it has the sole right to define marriage, but at the same time, we are not legally bound to follow that definition. That's why ruling #1 makes no sense to me and upsets me.

The fourth question adds to this. Is the current definition of marriage UN-constitutional. They chose not to answer this question. So they say it's the government's right to define marriage, it is the right of same sex couples to get married, but at the same time, the constitutional definition of marriage only as opposite sex couples isn't unconstitutional, but in the end it's up to individual religious groups to define what marriage is. See my problems with it?

Here's what I think. #1, the government's only two jobs in marriage is to maintain a registry, and to protect the innocent (so that is in terms of underage, forced or arranged, polygamous, incest, stuff like that). There ARE institutions which will perform same sex 'marriages'. Also, common law 'marriage' is legally acceptable in Canada, so it negates the whole thing anyway, because you don't need to be 'married' to have legal rights to marriage benefits.

So have a registry to maintain order, to qualify for the registry, you have to live with your partner for a time limited term (I think it's 6 months now) and sign a legal document saying that the relationship you have is a familial one, entitling you to tax and such benefits, and entitling both parties to divorce proceedings should the need arise. The other option, you have a marriage certificate signed by an institution with the right to do so, a church or whatever. It guarantees Homosexual's the rights they are guaranteed by the freedoms of the charter, but at the same time, it guarantees my right as a Catholic not to consider a same sex union a 'marriage', and to maintain that was ordained by God to be between a man and a woman. Basically it makes everyone responsible for their own actions.

There's my rant.

I hate Alberta Health Care

I really really really can't STAND Alberta health care.

So the story starts about a year ago, when I get on board for blue cross, or so I think. Everything is sent, but funny, I never hear back from them and never get a card or anything. I don't think anything of it cuz it isn't costing me money, and I had other insurance. Zoom to august 2005. I now don't have third party insurance, so I get the blue cross ball rolling, or so I think (this will be a common theme). Nothing for a bit so I check again in October, another letter is sent. Then in DECEMBER I get a letter saying I owe the Alberta government like $750 before they'll start up cuz I haven't been paying my health care premiums. I check my paychecks to be sure, and yeah, they've been deducting and the cheques have been going there in my name. So I let our office manager know and she sends another letter. Then I get a call today from a collection agency. A flippin' COLLECTION AGENCY!

So let's get the whole story straight, I apply a year ago, nothing, then I apply again, nothing, then I follow up, a month and a half later they say I haven't been paying. Now I know they have my correct address since at least april because of my tax return, and most certainly sooner because I've been in the hospital a couple times last fall. Now say anyone else, like I dunno a phone company, who is renouned for unbelievably crappy service (telus) would be on me after two months of not paying right, at least to say, uh where's the money. Then after 6 months, probably something similar. But no, not the gov't, they just take the extra money, do nothing with it, never call us to ask what it's for, even though we've registered me on the group plan, then without contacting me, just pass on a $700 bill to a collection agency, potentially messing up my credit rating.

This is stupid. Nettie's gonna deal with it tomorrow, if I don't have an answer by the end of the day I'm calling health care and starting to yell.

Stupid Players

I hate the dumbass backgammon players on the zone who quit when you're kicking their butt. It's backgammon, anything can happen, finish the game! Especially when I'm rated intermediate and they are experts. Jerks.
