Not so much fun as the superbowl ads.
I just read this article on yahoo.
Half of Young Americans to Get Sex Diseases - Study
Only half? Why can't all of us get them?
Its about STDs. The report claims that 50% of young adults have or will have an STD at some point. Scary eh?
Okay, so I'm all for sex education. I think young people need to know the truth. Not only that forms of birth control can help prevent some of the STDs, but also what ALL the STDs are, and which ones AREN'T effectively protected by condoms. My education in high school was, don't have sex, but if you do, use one of these properly and it will keep you more or less safe. Turns out it's less safe.
So some background, I used to work for CRHA sexual health and reporduction, and I learned more about the truth there. For example, there are 28 or more STDs. How bout another example, the article talks about the three most common STDs, and also talks about using a condom for prevention. How bout the fact that they are the tree most common precisely because a condom ISN't effective protection agains them. Or how bout this, the article talks about how some diseases leave no symptoms. Did they mention that they have no symptoms, except for your reproductive system slowly and quietly being destroyed, or maybe getting cancer?
So here's my point... maybe the reason that 50% of my generation is gonna get sick from an STD isn't because condoms aren't being used. Maybe it's because we aren't taught the whole story of what they're effective against and what they aren't.
With SO many sexual health organizations out there, religious and secular, conservative and liberal, why the Hell isn't anyone giving us the WHOLE story, and why aren't the people who ARE abstaining speaking up more about it. It's difficult, but not that impossible.
